FAQ's

How should I burn my candle on the first time?
It is important to burn your candle properly, especially on the first burn to get the maximum life span out of the candle. Please make sure you trim your wick to 1/4" (every time you light the candle) and ensure you allow the candle to melt to the edges of the jar on the first burn. Failure to reach a full melt pool on the first burn will cause a tunnel and the candle will continue to follow the tunnel for the life of the candle. This will limit the life of the candle and also cause issues for the wick.

Why coconut and soy wax?
There are many waxes to choose from when making candles and many well known candle companies choose to use paraffin wax in their candles which is made from petroleum. Petroleum is well known to carry carcinogens which can cause headaches, neasua, etc. While some resources claim there are limited or inconclusive evidence that burning paraffin wax is damaging to our health, we want our customers to feel comfortable when they are burning our products. This is why we only work with coconut soy wax for our products. There are many benefits to this wax, some of them being:

  • coconut soy wax is 100% natural and vegan
  • provides a better scent throw
  • cleaner burn
  • excellent glass adhesion, which means less frosting with temperature changes
  • beautiful creamy appearance

What are phthalates and parabens? And why is it important that your candles are free of these?
Phthalates are a family of industrial chemicals used in cosmetics, fragrances and other consumer goods. Phthalates are used in products as a binding agent, ensuring that cosmetics, for example, won’t separate as easily and the ingredients will stay dispersed throughout the product during its shelf life.
Parabens are classed as a preservative and are found in a lot of cosmetic products. They are added into products to increase their shelf life and to prevent any mould or bacteria from forming. You will find parabens in many cosmetic products such as shampoo, conditioner, moisturiser, deodorant, make-up and fragrances. They’re also sometimes included in food items such as fizzy drinks, processed meats and sauces among others.
Academic studies have voiced concerns over the effects that phthalates and parabens have on human health. Both have been linked to the likes of asthma, ADHD, breast cancer, behavioural issues and reproductive issues. Phthalates have also been recognized as a hormone disruptor. Phthalates and parabens are used in some candles for the same reason they are used in cosmetics – for binding and shelf life purposes.
Although there is still some debate on the effects from exposure to phthalates and parabens, Island Girls Candle Co only uses phthalate and paraben free fragrance oils to create our natural coconut soy candles and soy wax melts. It’s always been important to us to create non-toxic candles with natural ingredients that smell good and are safe to use in any home.

Why do I need to trim my wick?
Trimming your candles wick with every use will help it burn cleaner and more efficient, which will help maximize the candles life. The wick should be trimmed to 1/4" before each burn which will control the flames size ensuring your candle burns at an even, steady pace.

When do I stop burning my candle?
Please limit your candle burning time to 2-4 hours each use, or until the wax melts to the edge of jar. Burning your candle for longer periods will reduce the life of our candle. Please retire your candle when only 1/2" of wax remains at the bottom to avoid damage to the surface underneath your candle.

Where should I store my candle?
We use a coconut soy wax blend, which has a lower melt temperature then most waxes. This wax is also sensitive to cold which will cause "frosting" to the candle, causing the wax to pull from the jar which leaves a "frosted" look. To avoid melting or frosting, please be careful where you are storing your candle when not in use. Try to keep the candle in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight between 10-20 degrees C. Do not leave your candle outside or in your vehicle.

How long will my candle last?
We reccomend burning your candle within 1 year of purchase to achieve the best scent throw.

How much burn time will I get out of my candle?
If your candle is burned with proper care and maintenace, you should expect the following burn times:
8oz candle: approximately 40 hours.

What else should I keep in mind when burning my candle?
Please always burn your candle on a heat resistant surface away from drafts and anything that can catch fire. Keep candles away from children and pets at all times. Keep the melt pool free from wax trimmings or debris at all times.
